Microsystems Technology has been supported by the Federal Minis-try of Education and Research (BMBF) since 1990. The progress made so far has been remarkable. An international evaluation team that analyzed the funding by the Ministry, the current stage of development as well as future prospects in MST confirmed that the support for MST was highly effective. However, they also found that there are still many obstacles to the innovation process that require a continued national effort. These obstacles have a determining influence on the technological policy issues of the "Microsystems" framework program, which is a follow-up to the "Microsystems technology 2000+" program concluded in 2003:
